Hey there.
My name is James Broden. I’m a professional artist based in Montreal. I have had my own freelance design studio for over 15 years. For a while now I have been trying to steer my work towards illustrating for the movie and gaming industry. Just recently I was able to complete a series of concept paintings and character studies for an animated film which was a lot of fun.
My education was a checkered one. Majored in English at University, switched into graphic design and ended up a graduate of Illustration at Dawson College. Both have been a help in my career as Art Director. Now it’s time to settle into something a bit more fun. I hope to be able to work on more film projects as well as video games.
Please take a look at my portfolio pages to see my latest work. It’s getting closer to where I will start shopping around to other studios. Until then, if there is anything I can help you with please just reach out. I can be contacted by e-mail at info@brodenart.com
Cheers,
JB
Classic Illustration
From childhood, these things came pretty naturally to me. The good news is this is really what I was trained in. I learned all the basics in drawing, painting and using an airbrush. Though I work mostly with a Cintiq and Photoshop, these skills still prove valuable. I like to doodle in pen and ink when I have some free time. Plus I like to have an answer when my nieces and nephews ask “what’s a gouache?”
Digital Illustration
I am old enough to remember when Photoshop became a common illustrative tool. It took me all of a minute to shelve my Iwata airbrush and compressor. By the time multiple undo’s were introduced I was a true believer. I spend a good chunk of my day waist deep in Photoshop – creating my own brushes and can’t go anywhere without thinking of shooting reference texture shots. The 3D aspect is coming along.
Personal Info
OK. Let’s all agree I spend way too much time in front of a screen. When I don’t I do have a wife, dogs and some really old knees. On summer weekends I shoot baskets, eat moderately large breakfasts and try to limit the dog walks to four or five a day. We aren’t going to get into the chore thing. Really. That’s not why you called. I am trying hard to get the concept art thing to a full time occupation. I do enjoy it.
I have been a professional illustrator on and off for a while but I have been a freelance creative director since early in the 2000’s. The concept art aspirations have been a separate goal for the last few years.
