Hey there.
My name is James Broden. I’m a professional artist based in Montreal. I have had my freelance design studio for over 20 years. During the pandemic, things slowed, and I shifted my career over to becoming a professional concept artist. It resulted in a contract at Ubisoft Montreal where I spent over a year working on games like Star Wars Outlaws and Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
My education was a checkered one. Majored in English at University, switched into graphic design and ended up a graduate of Illustration at Dawson College. Both have been a help in my career as Art Director.
Please take a look at my portfolio pages to see my latest work. if there is anything I can help you with please just reach out. I can be contacted by e-mail at info@brodenart.com
Cheers,
JB
Classic Illustration
From childhood, drawing came pretty naturally to me. Though I ended up working as a lot as a graphic artist, my first love is always illustration. It’s what I studied in cegep – drawing, painting and using an airbrush. Though I work mostly with a Cintiq, Blender and Photoshop now, these skills still prove valuable. I like to doodle in pen and ink when I have some free time. Plus I like to have an answer when my nieces and nephews ask “what’s a gouache?”
Digital Illustration
I am old enough to remember when Photoshop became a common illustrative tool. It took me all of a minute to shelve my Iwata airbrush and compressor. By the time multiple undo’s were introduced I was a true believer. I spend a good chunk of my day waist deep in Photoshop – creating my own brushes and I can’t go anywhere without thinking of shooting reference texture shots. As for ZBrush and Blender, I have made some solid strides over the last few years. Maybe Ubisoft will call me back.
Personal Info
OK. Let’s all agree I spend way too much time in front of a screen. Way too much. I do have a wife, dogs and some really old knees that keep me occupied otherwise. On summer weekends I shoot baskets, eat moderately large breakfasts and try to limit the dog walks to four or five a day. We aren’t going to address the topic of household chores. It’s a red flag topic and someone might read this.

I have been a professional illustrator and freelance creative director since the early 2000s. My concept art career is only in its infancy, but there is enough here for you to see my abilities. If, for some inane Google search error, you ended up here and were actually looking for my graphic design studio site, please click on the logo below and the link will take you there. I apologize for any mistakes that the algorithms made. They can be a sneaky lot.
